- <p> DIED. JOHN WAIN, 69, writer; of a stroke; in Oxford, England.
- Wain was never happy about being lumped together with the "angry
- young men" of postwar British letters, but the theme of rebellion
- against the conventions of English middle-class life in his
- first novel, Hurry on Down (1953), made the comparison inevitable.
- Disillusioned heroes figured in later Wain work as well, such
- as Strike the Father Dead (1962) and The Smaller Sky (1967).
