  16. Wain was never happy about being lumped together with the "angry
  17. young men" of postwar British letters, but the theme of rebellion
  18. against the conventions of English middle-class life in his
  19. first novel, Hurry on Down (1953), made the comparison inevitable.
  20. Disillusioned heroes figured in later Wain work as well, such
  21. as Strike the Father Dead (1962) and The Smaller Sky (1967).
